Hiring a Designer

Hello friends,I would like to talk candidly with you about hiring a designer. I get asked a lot of questions about the process so I thought I would share my answers with you today.Over the past few months, I have had the opportunity to work with several clients on their renovations and design projects. We have had so much fun and created beautiful rooms together! Clients are happy and that makes me super happy! I love working with clients and making their dreams come true. This is the one thing that I could do all day and never tire of it :)For most of the clients that I encounter, working with a designer is a new concept. It can be overwhelming and even a little intimidating. There is just so much to think about and Heaven only knows where to start, right?Finding the RIGHT designer can be really tricky; so it's best to take your time and do some research. Finding the RIGHT designer is imperative to the success of the project. It's important that you spend the time and money to hire the one that's right for you and your project.Ask ten designers how to do something and you will get ten different answers! When hiring a designer, be sure to check out their website, portfolio photos, and references. Be sure to pay special attention to their design aesthetic too. Does it speak to you personally and make you smile? Do you instantly feel a connection to their work? Do you feel like they "get" you just by looking into one of the rooms they have designed? If not…they are probably not for you. You should feel an instant connection to your designer through their work and in person.Lakehouse private residence

Kitchen by Kim Hoegger Home

Every designer will do things differently; some charge for initial design consults and some don't. Some designers charge by the hour and some charge a fee based on the square footage of a project. And some, like me, determine the method by which they will charge after the initial consult during which they have determined the scope of the work. During a phone conversation, it may seem to me that you need full service design for which I would charge a flat fee based on square footage but once I have been in your space, you may very well be a candidate for an hourly design fee or vice versa. Give the designer the benefit of the doubt when it comes to determining how to charge. They know their business and are familiar with what it will take to do the work for you. TRUST your designer. If you can't trust your designer to take care of you and spend your money wisely then you haven't hired the right designer. TRUST in your designer and in the decisions that they make; this is a crucial part of the process. Without TRUST, the process doesn't work and it can miserable for everyone involved. In my opinion, meeting with a designer personally prior to hiring them is a must. You need to spend some time with the designer and get to know each other. The designer should be a good listener and be able to interpret your ideas. The money invested in an initial consult to determine if the designer is a good fit for you and your project will far outweigh the cost of the consult should you hire the wrong designer. Spend the money on the consult and avoid hiring the wrong designer and losing money down the road. I have heard nightmare stories about hiring the wrong designer and having terrible things happen - it's just like hiring the right hair stylist …do some research, hire the right designer.

Lakehouse private residence

Guest Bedroom by Kim Hoegger Home

Designers are artists in their own right. We are creative beings. We can visualize a space immediately upon entering it. We know instantly what the color palette should be and how to pull it together. We know precisely the scale and style that furniture should be and how to place it. It's what we do.It's why clients come to us for assistance.Hours of thought and research go into a drawing of a space before the pencil ever hits the paper and more times than not, many, many drafts of a plan are done before the right one is achieved. Same goes for fabric…hours can be spent flipping through fabric samples before the right one is found. I know that I personally spent almost a year scouring granite houses to find just the right one for my lake house…and it was worth the hunt!! I absolutely love it! In fact, that granite gets more hits and comments in my Houzz portfolio than any other product in any other project! Good design takes time and talent and that is what you are paying for when you hire a designer. Respect the process…all good things take time; and in designtime is crucial to the success of the project. Hiring a designer is like hiring the right hair stylist or attorney...worth every penny. DHOME_HOEGGER_HD2A8177HIRE the RIGHT designer!TRUST your designer!RESPECT the process!ENJOY the process! Have a great Thursday!! God Bless,Kim

Thank You Cottage Style!!!

WOW...I was on the phone with my Mom today while walking into Barnes & Noble. I was going in to check to see if the March issue of Cottage Style was on the newsstand. I had spoken with Jodi, the Editor of Cottage Style, last week and she informed it would be out soon and that I would LOVE the issue! She mentioned that the article on my lake house turned our really well. I was really looking forward to seeing it.As I rounded the corner, still talking to Mom, I gasped!!! Was that for real?? Was that MY LAKE HOUSE on the COVER of Cottage Style Magazine??? Mom, still on the phone, gasp too "OMG, what's wrong? Are you ok?" I couldn't talk, I was speechless…words wouldn't come, I just stood there starring at the Cover, my Cover...I started to cry(right there in B&N) and had to get a hold of myself to explain to Mom what was going on. All I could get out of my mouth was "I'm on the COVER, I am on the COVER…" Of course, she had no idea what I was talking about. "the cover of what?" I was finally able to explain through the tears and she was soooo excited!!!I still can't believe it and I am so honored to have had my work chosen to grace the cover of Cottage Style Magazine. Thank you so much Jodi!!! What a wonderful surprise!!! Most of all, I thank my Jesus for the many blessings that he gives to me and for the opportunity to serve him with my work.Cottage Style Cover Small Image I am so excited to share this with you! Grab yourself a copy today! So much fun!Have a blessed day :)Kim

Fresh & New in 2014 for KHH

Hello friends,Hope you all had a very Merry Christmas!! I enjoyed the holidays very much :) My most favorite part being time with my family; loved having the kids home from college and my youngest out of high school, loved all the precious time with my Mom this year but missing my Dad as he went home to be with Jesus just before Thanksgiving. Knowing he was spending Christmas in Heaven was comforting; lucky Dad, can't think of a more beautiful way to spend Christmas :)Hubby and I took the kids and Mom skiing in Park City, Utah and had an amazing trip! Such a wonderful time and no broken bones or concussions! Praise the Lord!Christmas Eve was special this year as my oldest daughter planned a reading of the Christmas story for us on Christmas Eve. It was such a beautiful story of the birth of Christ and having her share it with all of us was so very special, melted my heart. Such a beautiful gift to watch your children grow up and embrace family values and traditions. And NOW…back to work.January is going to be crazy busy(and I am turning 50 on the 1st, ugh). First there's taking down the Christmas decor at the shop.  Then it's time to shake things up a bit, move some things around for a fresh new look. That's always fun! I do the same at home after Christmas;  I love to de-clutter and rearrange. Makes me feel refreshed and ready to start a new year! Then comes Market in Atlanta!! Super excited about all the new things I will find for the shop! Watch for my Market report!Oh and some very exciting news!! Kim Hoegger Home will be featured in DHome Mag in January! I am thrilled and so honored too :) I will let you know as soon as it hits the news stands! For those of you who are ready to get your DIY on and looking to make some changes in your decor and your home(and I mention those separately because I really think they are two different things, more on that later in this post) we have so many wonderful activities on the calendar! You are going to love it! Amy Howard At Home Workshops and in-store demos, Fresh Floral Workshops, Chef presentations, a very special Thibaut Event and more!! As I mentioned earlier in this post, creating your home's decor is very different from creating your home itself. Discovering and placing decor is only one part of making a home a home and that's where Kim Hoegger Home comes in. We are here to assist you and teach you how to do both. From finding the perfect accessory or repainting an old piece of furniture to creating your own floral arrangements and preparing a lovely dinner for friends and family, we are here to teach you how to bring it all together so that you love everything about your home.

Creating a Home takes lots of work as you all well know…and it's the little things that mean the most. Flowers being one of those things for me and my family. Warms my heart to see fresh flowers on my daughter's dining room table when I come to visit her at school. I love that she is inspired by the beauty of flowers and is now embracing this tradition in her own home.

New for 2014 for Kim Hoegger Home Dallas are our in-store floral demos and the addition of  these absolutely beautiful and lifelike watergarden florals from The French Bee, Atlanta, GA. I LOVE flowers and prefer fresh to silk but for everyday beauty these lovelies from The French Bee will do the trick and provide beauty for years to come. No yellow water here folks!! People will have to touch these to know they aren't real and they will still have trouble believing they aren't!!

Add a little floral oil and they will never know the difference! Flowers make for a very happy, peaceful space. Invest in quality silk tabletop arrangements to brighten your desk, bedside table or bathroom.

Now I am off to take down some of the Christmas greenery, have a wonderful afternoon,

Grand Opening this Wednesday, December 4!!!

Hello friends,This is the week, the Grand Opening is drawing near and I am so excited to be able to share an evening with you in celebration of our brand new Dallas location!I sure hope you can join us and bring your friends for a fun evening of festive food and beverages from Sissy's Southern Kitchen & Bar and Annie's Bakery(soon to be our new neighbor on Henderson Avenue!)Annies Bakery logo  Sissy's Logo

When thinking about the upcoming event, I should be worried about all kinds of things…dotting my i's and crossing my t's but all I can think of is how delicious the food is going to be! Seriously, have you ever had the pleasure of sweets from Annies? Have you ever had the pleasure of southern classics from Sissy's? Oh my goodness, both are out of this world and I am so delighted to be bringing to all of my guests just a small sampling of what is available from each of these women.

Annie is a long time friend of mine from whom I have been purchasing the "best sweets around" for many years! She is simply the best baker that I know and I wouldn't think of having anyone else do wedding & special occasion cakes, birthday cakes, cupcakes and cookies for my family and business events. I highly recommend her and am so excited that she is moving her business to Henderson in December!! How lucky can we get?

Lisa Garza, owner and executive chef for Sissy's Southern Kitchen & Bar, is a new neighbor and friend of mine here on Henderson. She is incredibly talented and so much fun! Every time I eat at Sissy's I am blown away by the menu items I have chosen. Each one better than the last. If you haven't been to Sissy's, I highly recommend that you go very soon and try the Fried Chicken! Better yet, come and dine on a Saturday morning and try the Chicken & Waffles…OMG! You won't believe your taste buds.

Here's a sneak peek of a few of the items Lisa will be providing on Wednesday….My Oh My...

Sissy's Deviled Eggs with caviar

Curry Deviled Eggs with cre'me fraiche and tobiko caviar

Sissy's Squash Puppies

Squash Puppies with whipped Texas Honey Guild butter and jalopeno jelly

Sissy's Pickled Shrimp

Pickled Shrimp marinated with onion, tomato and crushed red pepper

Doesn't this sound delicious??? I can hardly wait! And then there's the Apple Cider Whiskey Punch! The great part is that this is just a few of the festive food items that will be served during the evening. We haven't even talked about dessert? And I will save that one as a surprise :)

Hope you can join us in celebrating our new opening in Dallas. We look forward to seeing you all on Wednesday evening!

Surely you have been enticed by all this talk about the glorious food that will be there ;)

See you soon,

Kim
